Latex gloves could soon be a thing of the past in the operating room.
Public Citizen, a consumer watchdog group, has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban gloves made from natural rubber latex and those that have cornstarch powder because of possible allergic reactions.
The most common symptom is a skin rash.
More serious symptoms can include sneezing and runny nose, difficulty breathing, cough and wheezing. Most hospitals already screen patients prior to surgery.
About 35-percent report a sensitivity to latex.
